The Internationalization and Europeanization of national law has proceeded apace in recent decades. This development is, however, only rarely mirrored in the curricula of today's law faculties. This textbook aims to break this mould, seeking to help students to understand that legal systems do not only exist and function in their own national context but also within the broader context of law beyond national borders. The authors provide a clear account of international and European public and private law in order to familiarize future generations of lawyers with international and European law and to analyze the impact of supranational legal systems on the development of national law.
Die Darstellung ist übersichtlich, das Druckbild sehr ansprechend gestaltet. Immer wieder finden sich grau unterlegte Kästchen mit Beispielen oder weiterführenden Hinweisen und Wiederholungsfragen. Positiv hervorzuheben ist - leider keine Selbstverständlichkeit - auch die sprachliche Qualität der Darstellung, sodass die Studierenden durch die Benützung des Buches auch Ihre Kenntnisse der englischen Rechtssprache verbessern können. Zusammenfassend handelt es sich um eine wichtige Bereicherung der Studienliteratur; als Wiederholung kann das Buch auch namentlich Berufseinsteigern und Berufsanwärtern zur Vorbereitung auf Berufsreifeprüfungen ans Herz gelegt werden.

Thomas Thiede studierte Rechtswissenschaften, Ökonomie und Politikwissenschaften in Greifswald (Deutschland), Wien und Innsbruck und war von 2005 bis 2010 als Research Assistant und von 2010 bis 2012 als Junior Scientist am Institut für Europäisches Schadenersatzrecht (ETL) der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften tätig. Von 2013-2015 war er Universitätsassistent am Zentrum für Europäisches Privatrecht der Universität Graz. Seit Dezember 2015 ist er Universitätslektor am Institut für Zivilrecht, Ausländisches und Internationales Privatrecht der Universität Graz, seit Dezember 2016 Lehrbeauftragter an der Ruhr Universität Bochum, Deutschland.

Brigitta Lurger studied Law and Economics in Graz (Austria),
Ph.D. 1992, and received her LL.M. degree at Harvard Law
School in 1994 (Joseph H. Beale Prize for conflict of laws).
In 1995 she became attorney-at-law in New York and received
the Diploma of International Law of the Hague Academy of
International Law (Netherlands). She wrote her habilitation
thesis on the Unification of Contract Law in the EU at the
Max-Planck-Institute in Hamburg (1995-1998); from 2000 to
2004 she was Professor of Private Law, Comparative Law and
Private International Law at the University of Salzburg, before
joining the Law Faculty at the University of Graz (Institut
für Zivilrecht, Ausländisches und Internationales Privatrecht).
She was Member of the Study Group on a European
Civil Code, contributor to the Draft Common Frame of Reference
(Book VIII on Ownership of Goods) and teaches Law
of Obligations, European Private Law, Consumer Protection,
International Sales Law and Private International Law at the
University of Graz and other universities.
